Lawyer for E. Jean Carroll says Trump wants to delay $5 million payment

Lawyers for former President Trump have requested a delay in the $5 million payment awarded to writer E. Jean Carroll by a 2023 jury, as they plan to ask the Supreme Court to reconsider his appeal in Carroll’s sexual abuse and defamation case. Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, stated that Carroll does not consent to the delay and has asked for the immediate release of the funds. Kaplan has also requested a judge to expedite the disbursement process, citing the cost of further delays in the nearly four-year-old litigation. The Supreme Court recently declined to hear Trump’s appeal, which upheld the jury’s decision that found Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll in the 1990s. Carroll celebrated the court’s decision, while Trump continues to deny the allegations. Additionally, Trump is appealing another jury’s decision that awarded Carroll $83 million for other defamatory statements. QUESTION: How might the outcome of this legal battle influence public perceptions of accountability for powerful figures?
