FIFA rejects Belgium’s appeal of Folarin Balogun’s red card ban suspension

President Donald Trump confirmed he spoke with FIFA President Gianni Infantino to request a review of U.S. soccer star Folarin Balogun’s red card suspension. Trump felt the suspension, given for a foul during a July 1 match, was unfair. Following the call, Balogun’s suspension for the U.S. match against Belgium was postponed for a year, a rare decision that drew criticism from Belgium. FIFA’s Appeal Committee rejected an appeal from the Belgian Football Association, stating they had no standing in the case. Red cards are typically not reviewable during the World Cup, making this situation unusual. Trump defended his actions, stating he merely expressed his opinion and did not influence the decision. The U.S. and Belgium are set to play in Seattle. Trump’s call with Infantino, which included additional evidence from the U.S. government, took place last week. QUESTION: How might the involvement of political leaders in sports decisions impact the integrity of the games?
