Unstable building in Midtown forces evacuations, street closures

An unstable building under construction in Midtown Manhattan led to evacuations and street closures after firefighters responded to reports of falling bricks at 235 E. 42nd St. More than 100 fire and EMS personnel arrived to find structural damage, including buckling and sagging floors between the 21st and 26th floors. No injuries were reported, and all workers were accounted for. Mayor Zohran Mamdani noted additional movement in a compromised column, prompting emergency crews to shore up the building with trusses. Nearby buildings were initially evacuated, but many were allowed to repopulate by late Tuesday night, except for a few still under evacuation orders. Traffic restrictions remain in place on 42nd and 43rd streets. Governor Kathy Hochul stated her team is ready to assist as needed. Officials continue to monitor the situation and will update on reentry when safe. QUESTION: How might the structural issues in this building impact future construction projects in urban areas?
