Battle of the Anthropocene: allegations re-ignite row over proposed geologic epoch

Researchers are revisiting a debate about whether Earth is in a new geological epoch called the Anthropocene, a term used to describe the current era where human activity significantly impacts the planet. In 2024, the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) rejected a proposal to officially recognize the Anthropocene, but some scholars argue that the decision was not transparent and lacked proper explanation. They are calling for the release of documents and an independent review to ensure trust in scientific processes. The debate centers on whether human-driven changes, like increased carbon emissions and nuclear testing, mark a new epoch distinct from the Holocene, which began 11,700 years ago. Despite the rejection, many scientists believe the evidence for the Anthropocene is strong and continue to use the term widely. QUESTION: How might recognizing the Anthropocene as an official epoch change the way we address environmental issues?
