In Cornell investigation, Gov. Hochul says AG James will find out “how was this woman denied justice”

New York Attorney General Letitia James has been appointed as a special prosecutor in a rape case at Cornell University, following an executive order by Governor Kathy Hochul. The case involves allegations from a former student who claims she was drugged and raped by multiple men at the Chi Phi fraternity house in October 2024. Concerns have been raised about the initial investigation by the Cornell Police Department and the decision by the Tompkins County District Attorney not to prosecute. Hochul expressed doubts about the DA’s ability to handle the case effectively, prompting the appointment of James to ensure a fair investigation. The university supports this decision, and the Attorney General’s office is tasked with investigating and potentially prosecuting any offenses. The student has also filed a lawsuit against the university and seven men, alleging failure to protect her. The DA’s office has since reopened the case, and an external review of Cornell’s response is underway. QUESTION: How might the involvement of a special prosecutor impact the outcome of this case and the perception of justice in similar situations?
