Fugitive wanted for allegedly bribing Venezuelan officials taken in U.S. custody

Alvaro Pulido, a businessman wanted in the U.S. for allegedly bribing Venezuelan officials to secure state contracts, has been taken into custody. Pulido was indicted in Miami in 2019 and 2021 as part of an investigation into his business partner, Alex Saab, who was an ally of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. The U.S. had offered a $10 million reward for Pulido’s arrest. His capture was the result of a joint investigation by the DEA, FBI, and Homeland Security. Pulido’s initial court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday in Miami. Venezuelan authorities have not commented on the arrest, highlighting the challenges faced by acting President Delcy Rodríguez in balancing internal political pressures. Pulido was previously arrested in Venezuela in 2023 during a crackdown on corruption in the state oil company PDVSA. Prosecutors claim Pulido and Saab used offshore companies to pay bribes for contracts to import essential goods during Venezuela’s economic crisis. Saab, who was extradited to the U.S. and pleaded guilty to related charges, has agreed to cooperate with authorities. QUESTION: How might the arrest of Alvaro Pulido impact the political landscape in Venezuela and its relations with the United States?
